What is an alpaca test drive? This is a revolutionary new program started by us here at True Blue Farm. Not too long ago, we were looking into the alpaca lifestyle, but without any farming background were hesitant to invest. With the cost of the alpacas, we were not sure we had adequate shelter, didn't know much about feeding or medical care so we balked at purchasing at first.
We heard from several people at the fair that they were planning on investing, but had little animal husbandry experience and were afraid they would make a very costly mistake. We thought about this for a while and recognized that the first alpacas we had on the farm were some rescue geldings that were hardy enough to get us through our small, start-up mistakes. |
Don't misunderstand, our two favorites are rescues and they are some of the most well-behaved alpacas in the herd. Recognizing this, we decided that we would "loan" these alpacas to people who are considering entering the business for a period of months (specified in advance). This would allow them to interact with alpacas and get a feel for the care and maintenance before having to make a large capital investment. We understand that alpacas may not be for everyone and would rather have someone find out in advance if that is the case. The "foster owners" will maintain two of our males at their farm and will be responsible for their upkeep. We will conduct scheduled farm visits and consultations to assist with husbandry and maintenance issues.
| What is the cost of this program you ask? We simply require you to provide feed, hay, and whatever routine care is required for the animals. A small deposit is required, but will be returned at the end of the designated lease period or applied toward the purchase of your animals. At the end of the loan, the foster owners will have the option to purchase one or both of the rescues and will receive a discount on any alpacas purchased from True Blue Farm.
